Hi,  I will be 51 yrs old in July.     I love airplanes, and have always wanted to learn to fly but never had the opportunity.  Well, my question...at my age is it unrealistic to want to be come a commercial pilot?

I realize that airlines mandatorily ground pilots at age 60...but there are corporate, and many other carriers.  I'm not thinking of doing this for financial reasons, just for my love of aviation.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Rbail

Rbail,

We placed a graduate with Comair Airlines at the age of 52 last year.  To the airline it makes sense,  as they know they will have him for 8 years.  And, there are other opportunities available after 60, such as working for the airline's training department, or moving over to corporate flying.

Now it's all a question of how long it will take for you to get the required certificates/ratings and experience (typically 1000 hours total flight time, and a FAA Commercial Certificate with Instrument & Multi-Engine Ratings) to qualify for employment with a airline. If you are starting from zero, it will take approximately 2 years before your are qualified, assuming you conduct training at a intensive flight academy.

Hope this answers your questions, feel free to write me privately if you have additional questions.

Heck Rbail I'm in the same boat 49 this July! Had the same questions that you have. I started my training about 10 years ago and quit after about 13 hours, last Aug with a carreer change in mind, I started thinking about flying again. 58 hours later for a total of 71 I'll be taking my PPL checkride within the next week. Plan is to jump right into the Instrument training pay as I go, (not going into debt for this) should have that knocked out in 6 months or so and then it's all time building, and a short stint with an instructor for the required commercial training. I do not expect to fly the big boys, but that's ok. There's plenty of other opportunities in aviation, most don't pay what the heavy drivers make, but that's ok, I don't need to make alot of money.

One suggestion I might offer up is to look at programs like the PACE program at San Juan College in New Mexico.  I am 51 and if I was going to do the airline thing and was just starting (with less than 500 hours) I would do that program.

You can have a job with MESA without doing the instructor job, with less than 300 hours, in like 1 year.  The faster you get the airline the faster you start making money and the more senority you get.
