It will depend on your instructor, An intro ride will be a walkaround (Checking airplane controls, fuel and such) performed each time you fly. You will then often get to taxi around the airport learning how to control the plane on the ground. you should get to takeoff fly over your house and come back and land with help of course.

My first flight was in an ultra light 2 Christmas ago, I did not get to touch anything. Everyone said just go get your PL instead of UL. So I went for it, He had me walkaround, taxi, then taxi to the end of the runway, said "Push the throttle in, when you get to 60 kts pull back yoke (Keep the horizon in sight)"  Smiley that's what I looked like. We flew over my house 15 miles away then came back and I landed with more help than he let on. I just gave him my Credit Card and said I'll see you tomorrow. It took two months and I had my PL.

Dan, that was truly inspirational.  I was already anxious.
Hopefully..., nah I'll just let on that that's what I want the first flight to be like.  Two months, how many flights per week did you average?

I aquired a lot of time when I went to pick up my plane in Oklahoma. I got all my IFR done at that time. I usually flew twice a week for two hrs at a crack. I was very green when I first got my license, but it all comes together very fast after that. You just got to keep flying every week. I found that if you did not fly for a while you get rusty quick. A lot of the stuff came second nature to me, like the radio work. I was a Ski Patroller so talking on the radio was second nature. I also studied more than most do, I took my written 3 weeks before ground school ended and had my PL 1 week before class ended. My CFI said that had never happened before. My suggestion would be to find an old or buy new Gleim pilot handbook and just start reading. The handbook reads rather well, the Testprep may help pass the test but reads like crap. If you just read the handbook with out trying to retain all of it you will get a lot out of it. In other words read it for fun. The Gleim CD is only $50.00 and it is the same as the test. just keep taking the test until you get 80% then go and take the test. Find a good ground school one that is fun. You can take ground school at the same time you are flying. You can even take it after you pass the test. Once you make up your mind get the finance package and get it done @ least twice a week 2hrs each flight. That is not a rush through it is because for the first part of the lesson you review what you did last time. If it takes 45 min to review you only get 15 min of new stuff in a 1 hr lesson. Pay attention while landing, that is what will hold you up on soloing. There are a lot of tricks to get the landing part just come on back and ask. Remember you are not rushing if you get it faster you are just not wasting time. Fore every week you do not fly it will cost you an hour extra to catch back up. One other thing that really helps is to ride a long on another students lesson. Cheesy  remember to have fun when it stops being fun stop and rest.

Dan, that's an awesome post!  Unfortunately, I'm broke and paying off a credit card and my car, so I have to wait for my once per week sessions until late July.  HOWEVER, I'm with ya on the reading part - that's free! Smiley   Studying is cool; there's much to learn and I nabbed a FAR/AIM and given that ASA tells you what to read for "Private Pilot" "Commercial" "Instructor" etc., I don't feel lost.  Just finished the FAR and will start the AIM tonight or tomorrow.  Until late July, it's all hitting the books and getting the think down Wink

Where are you now?  What are you flying and studying for?

Cheers,
Jeff

I am at around 210 hrs. I fly a Cherokee Six. I just traded my 172 for a 150 for my son to train in. That was a trip to FL and back. one way in fair comfort (172) and back in a sardine can (150). I am building a Bellanca Viking as a homebuilt with a glass panel. I will try and post a pic. (File was too big) I am half way through IFR but I am in no hurry to get done.
