Hello and good day.  I have a question about airplane ownership.  I am interested in buying my first airplane.  I am looking a either a new Cessna 182 RG or a new Piper Arrow.  You most likely don’t even care.   My question is how does a lease back work from either a flight school or just an FBO that only rents aircraft.

I want to own a plane but I am not able to fly it like a plane owned should be flown. I have about 4 to 10 hours a month that I can fly.  I would like the other 20 or 40 to be flown by the flight school or FBO.  

I am hoping that some one here can shed some truly need information before I take the plunge to owning a $200,000 aircraft. Thanks for all the information to be sent my way.  :confused:

A leasback is basically where you own the airplane and all it's financial risks, insurance, etc., and the FBO uses the plane to rent to students and renters - and pay you a portion of the rental income. There are some good tax advantages to it - but a few basic disadvantages: First, you don't get to use your plane when it's rented to someone else - Second - you are letting student pilots use (and maybe abuse) the plane and third - your insurance rates will be very high.

There is obviously much more that goes with it - and FBO contracts are different (for example some will offer a reduction in tie down rates and gasoline) but that is the basics.

Cessna puts out of good information package on lease backs - just be sure to factor in the insurance costs - which are considerable

Leasebacks are good and bad.  I found a helpful site that is in Central Texas www.flyaustin.com .
