Hi, my name is Alan, I'm from Taiwan. I am attending Fullerton Junior College at the moment. trying to finish the G.Es as required like everyone else, and i am going to transfer to Mount San Antonio College next year, because i live close by, hoping to get in the aviation program. I heard they have a great flighting team, i can't wait! But, before all that fun stuff, i have couple questions that i am still confused about. Can anyone please take their time and answer my questions, that would help me a lot, to choose my careerer path as a pilot.

#1. Can i still fly if i wear eyeglass? "nearsighted"

#2. What math / science skill is required? If there is any.

#3. What are the expenses? How much will i have to spent? It varies? (I am an international student and that means a lot of $$.)

#4. I heard the field of aviation is not stable, why is that?

Hi Alan. Welcome to the group. I don't have answers to all of your questions as I am a beginner myself. But I do know about the eyeglasses.  Cool The answer is Yes, you can still fly as long as you pass the vision test.
You see, before you are ready to solo you'll need to get a Medical Certificate which is also your student pilot license. Your school will give you a list of FAA-approved doctors in your area to choose from. The doctor checks your vision, hearing, blood pressure and other vital signs. You also fill out a form about your medical history. Thent hey issue the certificate. In my case, I need to wear my glasses to drive a car. The doctor told me I need to get bifocals, so I will do that. My vision without glasses is 20/400. Shocked So unless your vision is worse than mine you shouldn't have any problem passing.

I only have an answer for question 2, but it is not a definate answer. You might want to do a little more reasearch instead of just taking my answer straight up. You will need to be able to calculate the wind speed and direction and some other things quickly for take-off, landing and turbulance. I'm not sure if you would classify the flight training science or any part of the aviation process to get your licence.

sorry, I forgot 1 thing to tell you. You don't need to any courses in college to become a pilot. I know someone that has his licence and didn't take any courses in college.

oh really? well, i live in Southern California, and i live 30mins away from Mount San Antonio College. They offer the basic fly pre classes such as "navigation, aviation weather, aviation safety, aircraft & engines, federal aviation regulations, instrument ground school, primary pilot ground school, air transportations and commercial flight. these are total of 27 units, but it states that if i want to graduate with an A.S. degree in commercial flight, i will need to accumulate 60units total, so that means the rest of the units i will need to get from the general ed. first. Besides i know what i want now, aviation is what i want, and in the industry of aviation i will need to obtain a B.S. degree, so i think general ed. is required for all.

As far as I know, you need the college degree to be an airline pilot. But if you're getting a pilot lecense to fly just for pleasure, then no college is needed.
