You can talk to 10 pilots and get 10 differant answers.   You might visit www.jetcareers.com - I think they have more airline type memebers...at least for now  Cool

Go to the local airport and meet the locals and the transients.

Doing the pilot thing as a career is good. I am going to keep this short, as I could go on for a while about it.

Good
1) Job is a lot of fun
2) You get to see a lot of things most don't
3) The flying itself is easy work once you get the hang of it
4) There is potential to make a good living

Bad
1) Depending on the path you choose, you can be gone from home a lot (sounds cool in the beginning, but isn't so cool after a while)
2) Though there is potential to make a good living, the pay for the first while in the career is bad
3) The job market fluctuates a lot. There can be times when employers can't find enough employees. And there can be times when finding a job as a pilot is impossible (when I first started out from colllege with all my ratings I worked as a grocery bagger at safeway for a while)
4) It can be a trying job as a lot of people like to play armchair pilot with your decisions or actions (I suppose this can improve safety overall though). Or passengers think you should be absolutely infallable. Or there's the FAA sitting off to the side looking for an excuse to take your license (they really aren't, but it sure feels that way).
5) Hours can be not be so good. I have lost all concept of weekends, nights, and holidays.

Overall, the job can be worth it if you really love to fly.

As to the pay, it can be good in the long run. However, it can be very misleading as the high paying jobs will take you a while to get to. In the meantime, the pay is kind of bad actually. When I first started working as a pilot I had a four year degree and had spent a lot of money on my pilot ratings, and was making about $20,000 per year. I have been working as a pilot now for a little over 5 years and am making about 50% more than the beginning.

I hope this helps.
