It will not be hard going back and it will GREATLY make you a safer pilot.  It is still good to know traditional navigation if the computer goes down or you have electrical failure in the plane.  Besides it is more fun since you can get your co pilot to help Smiley

I would purchase the Gleim book for $15.95 or so and start studying for the Private Pilot Knowledge Test...the more you know the better you will do in training and even save money and time.

Well as a former airplane owner I can say for sure that you will NOT save money by owning your own airplane during training and maybe not even after training unless you fly 200 hours per year or more.

However you might lease your airplane back to a flying club or flight school to help pay for the airplane.  Most people own airplanes so they have one available when they want not to really save money.

If I was to purchase an airplane again it would either be a Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) or a Cessna 172.  4 passenger airplanes will get more use, the C152 is only good for two lightweight people.

It is where I happen to be located is all.  It would be great to see others try this in towns they are in.

This is a great idea!  Let me see if I can figure out a way to do this.  Perhaps I can add an AIRPORT to the profile?

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the question, I will offer some input and perhaps someone else can make sure I am close to being correct  Smiley

When it comes to 'hours' in a particular make and model of airplane, usually that is for airplanes that have retractable landing gear or a constant speed propeller or some other type of special equipment.

Your typical training airplane will usually only require a "check out" at another airplane rental place.  The check out will usually be slow flight, turns, landings, stalls and maybe some navigation.  You can not 'fail' this type of flight because an instructor does this, not an examiner.  The flight usually last an hour.  The people renting the airplane just want to make sure you are safe is all.

In your post you mentioned 'seat 4' - as you will learn or know generally a 4 seat airplane will not hold 4 adults from a WEIGHT perspective.  Your limiting issue is weight really, it all depends.  I used to say 3 people and some baggage for planning trips that lasted overnight.

I hope I got to the answer?  If not let me know.

Thanks for visiting Pilot Journey!

Hi -

I see this post never got an answer after all this time  Sad

Yes, look for a Part 141 school that accepts the GI Bill and it will pay for 60% of training AFTER the Private Certificate.....

Hi Jason and thanks for the post!

You might want to ask that question over at www.sportpilottalk.com as well, because they have a Sport Pilot focused forums section.

That is an interesting question, I wish I knew that much  Smiley

Thanks again for posting and please come back soon

Hi Scott!

Welcome to the forums.

No college will not squash the dream, but it could slow it down some depending on the airline.  The real issue is what do you do in the future if you decide not to fly OR you have a medical issue?  That is where the degree would come in handy.

Also you might get a better student loan if you did school and flying together, at a place like San Juan College in Farmington NM (they are a customer here on Pilot Journey) but any two year community college with an aviation program could also work.

28 is not old Smiley  - You also might want to think about a program like PACE from San Juan where you can get into the right seat of a regional jet as fast as possible.  There might be other programs like that out there as well.

Have you seen the free Career Pilot Seminar here on Pilot Journey?  There is an ad for it on the home page.

Thanks for visiting!
