Title: Airplane owners? Post by: ikkie on March 14, 2006, 08:08:10 PM I was just curious how many of you own your own airplanes...someday I would love to own my own plane but they seem so expensive and out of reach financially...just curious who out there do own their own.

Ownership is not that expensive, compare it to owning a couple of snowmobiles, or a Harley. The expense comes from flying. Planes need to be flown once a week. If you cannot devote enough time and expense to fly it you are probably better off renting or joining a club. Keep in mind that an older 150 can be found for $10,000.00 sometimes less. Then comes the where to put it. The hanger will cost more than the plane. Best, find a partner who has a plane on a private strip that cannot fly it enough anymore. The cost of flying it will be compareable to renting, but you will be able to keep it out for more days without penalty. Dan Title: Re: Airplane owners? Post by: jerryp on August 14, 2006, 08:11:49 AM Second Viking on finding a partner. I was partners in a 172M for 3 years and it was a great experience. We flew it about 150 hours/year and the overall cost was just a few bucks more than renting, with none of the hassles.
One of the things I did when looking for a partnership was to visit the local airports and inquire about the planes that didn't get flown often. Most local FBOs will know which planes these are. You can look up the owner by tail number (AOPA or Landings.com both have N-number databases), give them a call and find out if they're interested. To be honest, most people I contacted were more interested in selling than partnering, but I did find a couple of pilots willing to split fixed costs and inspections, but not the ownership of the plane. I found one 2 person partnership looking for a third in a 172SP, but it was too expensive for me. I ended up partnering with my CFII in a 172M. Title: Re: Airplane owners? How to fly cheep (cheepest is first) 1. Make a sign "Please take me for a ride". Hold it up while standing at the gate on Saturday morning. You'll be surprised. 2. Become a flight instructor. 3. Rent your airplane. 4. Buy a 2-seater, park it outdoors. 5. Buy an airplane, keep it in a hangar. Wish I'd known this some years ago. |
