Title: Learn in Piper Tomahawk or C172? Post by: SuperflyMD on July 22, 2007, 07:23:14 AM I have 2 airports/flight schools that are about the same distance from my house, same hourly costs, and similar instructors with decades of teaching experience. The major difference seems to be that one flies the more common C172, while the other flies a Piper Tomahawk.
Does anyone have experience with both? I could use some advice. Title: Re: Learn in Piper Tomahawk or C172? Post by: falconflyer on September 02, 2007, 08:23:30 PM Personally I would go with the Cessna. I don't have a formal reason other than I have flown the Cessna and love it...I have also heard that it handles better.

Personally I like Cessna's but this boils down to personal preference. I would take an intro flight in each and see what plane you like better. Airfreddy Title: Re: Learn in Piper Tomahawk or C172? Post by: Melody on January 09, 2008, 10:22:11 AM personally i would go with a cessna, the real difference between these two planes is basically cessna is high winged, and the piper is low winged. if you fly with a piper you would eventually need to do a conversion ( a few flying hours to convert to beable to fly with a low winged plane). landing with a Cessna is fairly harder than with a Piper, so during the conversion it would be slightly more difficult. quiet honestly though, flying with a Piper can be cheaper, so its not a bad option, its a person preference, if possibly try a test hour with both planes and you decide. its a very scary thing deciding. most people prefer a Cessna, but if you are comfortable in a piper, go for it, it will have NO impact on your future in aviation, if you are persuing one. I have not yet taken to the skys, but loads of reading has taught me all this. i researched as well, i have no idea how useful my info would be considering i have never had a lesson yet!! :-\

Overall I liked the way the piper handled in wind and landings, while I liked the Cessna for takeoffs and power. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. One thing I also liked with the high-wing is that you don't have to worry about fuel pumps that the piper has.
