Title: The steps to flying a BIG jet Post by: Wes on June 13, 2007, 07:31:20 pm I Work for UPS out of the Reno-Tahoe International gateway. Ever sense I started here I have wanted to fly. Here the planes we load are 757-200's. Ocassionally we get an A300 or a DC-8. Will someone please explain the steps I need to take to be able to fly planes like these. I attend UNR right now so I have about three years of college credits. I have talked to a lot of pilots that are a little younger to se how they became F/O's and all started in the Airforce. Should I go to a local little airport and ask around for flight instructors or should i try to attend a major college like Embry? I really think that i would be happy as a pilot either commercial or cargo lines i just dont know how to get started. Any advixe will be appreciated!

First if you have not done it I would suggest you take a look at the Career Pilot Seminar: http://pilotjourney.com/career_pilot_seminar That will answer many questions. The good news is you can train at a local school or a large school. Larger schools have more resources and sometimes even contacts with the airlines. However, if you are willing to relocate then check out a more formalized flight academy that has a FAA approved 141 course. This means they are more structured and are more likely to have the airline contacts or some connections for career placement.
Embry R. may be a little steep at your current position seeing as you have already completed most of your college. Just finish that up and try to find a flight academy that offers a up-to-date fleet, good customer service, and ease of aircraft scheduling. Not all of them got their degree in aviation like I am going to, but they did all get a degree, then join the airforce or navy after some flight training and became pilots that way. When it comes down to it, for many reasons, carriers flying Boeing/Airbus seem to REALLY prefer military training.
