Title: Grass strip 1500ft enough? what planes are limited Post by: Harry on December 20, 2006, 10:03:48 PM I currently dont fly but I own a grass strip, it is approx. east-west 1940ft long now and we have 2 planes here that get in and out with no problems, I should add that there is a good sized feild on the west side prob 500-600 ft before reaching the tree line, and 800-1000 feet to the east before getting to trees. the planes we have are a cessna 150 and a '43 tailorcraft(or something like that) Tail dragger. my situation is this, im selling my property and keeping some of the land at the east end which will include 400 feet of airstrip, shortening the strip down to 1500+ feet(around 1525ft I think) i dont plan on putting any trees in the way or anything just maybe a fence for our horses, Is 1500 ft a good airstrip? one guy that flys here(Taildragger) said that it is a great strip now(he called it a rolls royce) and would have no problems getting in and out even if it is shortened, just wondering what types of planes the - 400 ft might limit from comeing in. I havent talked to the cessna owner but from watching him he looks like it wouldnt be a problem for him either. just looking for some input thanks

If you are near sea level, and with lack of obstacles at both ends, 1,500 ft should be enough for most single engine planes.
When I flew in the Idaho backcountry, the length of the fields wasn't as much of a concern as the elevation and heat (except for the really short strips). Having descent performance for takeoff is the main concern for shorter strips. I hope this helps. Greg |
