Recent articles in The Wall Street Journal and The Baltimore Sun state that fast-growing foreign airlines and growth in U.S. discount airlines have led to a surge in demand for pilots. In the U.S., some regional airlines (generally, those using aircraft with 100 seats or less) have lowered their experience level requirements. Overseas, India and Australia are experiencing a shortage of pilots. According to the Baltimore Sun “AMR Corp.’s American Eagle Airlines hired more than 500 pilots this year [2007] — one-sixth of its total rank of 3,000 pilots. About 170 pilots were called back up to American Airlines, and about 30 others per month found jobs elsewhere.” In short, demand for pilots is high and the pool of pilots is small. This would seem to suggest that now is a good time for those interested in making a career out of flying.See also: http://www.baltimoresun.com/business/careers/bal-pilots1224,0,807212.story?coll=bal_sports_util Pilot shortage to intensify
