WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BECOME A PILOT?
Start with the basics. There are certain fundamentals that you will learn, such as why and how an airplane flies, and how that relates to all of the components and systems that make up your aircraft. Next comes the basic flying skills, such as flight at various airspeeds, climbs, turns, descents, emergency procedures, and of course - takeoffs and landings. At first it’s all new to you, but you will find that you will quickly become proficient at the basics. Then comes the big day; your first solo flight! Your family and friends can watch as you fly alone for the first time. It’s a big step, one that you will remember forever. At this point, you are well on your way to becoming a private pilot. Now that you have mastered the basics, you move on to more advanced lessons, such as cross country navigation, flying at night, and instrument flight. You will continue to work with your instructor, but you will also fly solo to fine tune your skills. The very last step you will take is an exam to obtain your license. Don’t worry though; your instructor will prepare you well for the test. Once you receive your license, you are a fully certificated pilot.
WHERE SHOULD I GO TO LEARN?
Vector Aviation, based at Lost Nation Airport in Willoughby, Ohio is a professional flight school dedicated to developing safe, proficient and well-rounded pilots. We follow a proven syllabus to ensure that your lessons are smooth and efficient. Our instructors come from a variety of backgrounds, such as general aviation, the military, airlines, and collegiate training courses. The combined experience of our instructors allows Vector Aviation to offer our students a broad training curriculum. All of our instructors take pride in training their students to the highest proficiency possible. In addition to our professional staff, Vector Aviation maximizes the student’s experience by operating out of an airport that is very well suited for flight training. With two runways, pilots at Lost Nation are able to take advantage of favorable winds. Lost Nation is also close to the “practice area” that student pilots in Northeast Ohio use for training, which makes for more efficient use of your flying time. You can fly to the practice area quickly, avoiding valuable flight time needed when flying out of other airports. In addition, Vector Aviation students don’t sit on the ground waiting for a lineup of business jets to takeoff or land. The combination of location, runway configuration, and a student friendly environment makes your training experience cost effective and relaxing. Vector Aviation has a variety of well-maintained aircraft available for training and rental, ranging from 2-seat trainers to complex and high performance aircraft, as well as a flight simulator. We are continually adding to our fleet to provide the finest and most diverse aircraft options available in this area.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE, AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The minimum time required for a private pilot license is 40 hours. Realistically, most students require a little more than the bare minimum. At Vector Aviation, we don’t train to minimums; we strive for proficiency. Our goal is to train pilots to a greater level that makes them both safety oriented and confident in their skills. Students who fly 2-3 times per week make good progress, and generally become fully certificated pilots in around 6 months. We work with everyone’s schedule and realize that no two students are the same; we customize your training to match your schedule. The cost to become a fully rated private pilot may be less than you would expect. The typical cost for a student to become an FAA certified private pilot is about $6,000.00. That includes aircraft rental, instructor fees, supplies, and testing fees. Your costs may vary, depending on the type of aircraft you choose to fly and the consistency of your training schedule. At Vector Aviation, you do not have to pay up front. We provide several payment options that allow you pay as you go.
IS VECTOR AVIATION DIFFERENT THAN OTHER FLIGHT SCHOOLS?
Yes! At Vector Aviation, the chief flight instructor takes a personal interest in all of our students. He takes the time to meet and work with each student, and closely watch their progress. He has been instructing a wide variety of students for over 12 years and, with all of that instruction based at Lost Nation, has become very knowledgeable with aviation in northeast Ohio. In addition, all of our instructors have a wide range of experience that they pass on to their students. At Vector Aviation, we want to assure our students and renters that we are dedicated to providing a professional and enjoyable training experience.
SOUNDS GREAT, BUT HOW DO I KNOW IF IT’S FOR ME?
The best way to get started is to schedule an introductory flight lesson with Vector Aviation. It’s an opportunity to experience the fun of being a pilot. You will take a short flight with a certified professional instructor who will let you take the controls on your very first flight. The aircraft has fully functioning dual controls, so your instructor will help you as needed. Based on your comfort level, you decide how much you want to fly. It is likely you will be surprised at how well you do, and don’t forget to bring your camera.
ONCE I HAVE MY LICENSE, DO I HAVE TO BUY A PLANE?
Purchasing a plane is not necessary. At Vector Aviation, we offer airplane rental to qualified pilots. We encouraged you to rent a plane to take yourself or friends and family on trips to a wide variety of exciting destinations. You can get to your destination quickly, and without the hassles of going through a major airport and the airlines.
