The Eastern Michigan Aviation Flight Technology program prepares individuals for entry-level positions as professional pilots. Based upon the needs of the aviation industry, the Eastern Michigan University curriculum encompasses a program of study that takes the individual from student pilot to certified flight instructor. In addition, the flight program includes a number of specialized courses that include aviation management, human factors, system safety, air carrier certification, aviation law, regulatory processes, and crew resource management. The program also encompasses a general education curriculum designed to provide the student a well rounded knowledge foundation that prepares the graduate to function effectively in today’s global aviation community. The Aviation Flight Technology program consists of general education requirements (49-55 credit hours) and the aviation curriculum (70 credit hours).
Flight training is conducted by Eastern Michigan’s partner, the Eagle Flight Center, which is located at Willow Run Airport. Using new Cessna 172s equipped with Garmin 1000 glass cockpit technology, the student learns to fly at a controlled airport. This allows the student pilot to learn to operate in controlled airspace throughout all phases of instruction. Each flight course consists of a series of flight training activities and Course Progression Classes (CPCs). Topics covered in the CPCs include training policies, standard operating procedures, cold weather operations, safety, flight planning, professionalism, career planning, and subjects related to flight course content.
